I Could Be Sensible

I could be sensible ...but why start now? I could take the early train drink some water, call it tame say, “that’s plenty for tonight” do the boring thing just right I could check the time again make a list and count to ten give myself a little speech about restraint and getting sleep But you’re laughing I’m still dressed and behaving sounds like stress I already did the thinking I already made the case Then I looked around and figured I could waste a little grace I could be sensible I could go home I could make one good decision and leave well enough alone I could be sensible but where’s the fun in that? I already did the thinking now I’m taking it back I could be sensible Not tonight Good idea Bad timing Good girl Still deciding Actually No. I could keep my shoes on straight leave before it gets too late say, “I’ve really got to run” like I haven’t just begun I could keep my hands behaved keep tomorrow nicely saved keep the night from getting loud keep my head above the crowd But the bass hits you say, “stay” And my common sense takes five I already know the reasons I could recite every one But responsibility is boring when I’m finally having fun I could be sensible I could go home I could make one good decision and leave well enough alone I could be sensible but where’s the fun in that?
