Orange Peel Farmhouse Fence

CUSTOM

[Intro - sparse, dusty tremolo guitar, harmonium drone, a single detuned car-horn note swelling and fading] [Verse 1 - low alto, near-spoken, intimate menace, 6/8 funeral lope] Down the long dirt line of the farmhouse fence, where the wheat had gone to amber and the light was wearing thin, they had carried her so careful through the open and the dust, to the bunker in the gable where they swore she'd make it in. [Pre-Chorus - voice tightens, brushed drums enter, slight accelerando] But the wheel had already turned. A speck the far horizon couldn't hold — I saw her. And I leaned. And the engine found its word. [Chorus - full voice opens, operatic and ferocious, harmonium hymn swells, detuned horn note underneath] And I honked — one long note across the field, a hymn with no mercy and no mind to be concealed. The fence was just a promise that the wood would never keep. Run, little lamb. Your shepherds are asleep. [Verse 2 - pull everything back to almost nothing, breath and a single held organ note, mercy made audible] I confess I thought of mercy. For a breath, I thought of grace — a soft and harmless circle, a wide and gentle veer, to leave her there still running with the fright fresh on her face, a story she could carry: the Siren — and how near. [Bridge - slam, drums crash, brass blares, everything distorts] But bloodthirst is an honest thing; it doesn't ask, it leans. One final honk — the wood gave up — the world came off its seams. [sudden cut to silence, horn note bending downward] A small, surprised, astonished "No!" — the tiniest word there is — and the match closed over her like the closing of a fist. [Outro - half-spoken, unbothered, low drone returns] Then the radio bloomed with their fury at me — a hiss of broken voices through the static and the heat: [muttered, spiteful, static-thin backing whisper] Ugh. It's just an idiot. [lead voice, calm, secure, almost gentle] Well — let them christen me a fool. I know the bell I rang. I drove on. The horn went quiet. The circle pulled me home. [Outro instrumental - detuned horn fades into harmonium drone, then silence]
