writer's note Lately, I've been completely lost when it comes to classifying music genres. Even this song is labeled "Nu-jazz." While it does use a flute, the term "alternative" isn't present at all in its genre classification. This song was composed on my piano as usual, but what's the meaning of "Rhodes Whiplash," which frequently appears in the lyrics? Actually, it was the lyrics for a different song. If you bring in an original song without a title, Suno will give it a title related to the musical characteristics (back then, they were all just "untitled"), and that's what "Rhodes Whiplash" was. So, it's a song using a Rhodes piano, Whiplas is Hank Levy,'s jazz numbers famous for its extremely challenging rhythms of 7/4 and 14/8. This drummer-challenging song title became also the title of a film depicting the conflict between a drumming student and his strict instructor, which won three Academy Awards. However, my original songs don't have such complex time signatures, and to begin with, they were originally arranged in an acid jazz style, not jazz. I had Lynx write lyrics to put to it, but ultimately, it ended up being the music lyrics you see today. It's a strange song with a flute and electric guitar playing back and forth, but I hope you enjoy it. ============= [verse1] We used to speak in unfinished lines, Like midnight pouring through the blinds. You’d drift away, then circle back, A quiet storm on a familiar track. [Pre-Chorus] Flute performs rapid ascending and descending scales] You lose my name like smoke in air, Then find my heartbeat everywhere. No reason, no warning, no shame, You return and say my name. [Chorus] And it’s Rhodes Whiplash when you come back in, A tender kind of chaos under my skin. You forget me, then you fall in again, Like you were never really gone, just lost in the wind. No matter how far your heart will roam, You always end up where my love lives at home. [Verse 2] We’ve worn out every possible goodbye, Still you come back with that look in your eye. Like something ancient pulling you near, An answer you can’t hold, but you can hear. [Pre-Chorus] You lose my touch, then chase the flame, Across the dark, you call my name. No map, no promise, no control, Still you know the shape of my soul. [Chorus] And it’s Rhodes Whiplash when you come back in, A tender kind of chaos under my skin. You forget me, then you fall in again, Like you were never really gone, just lost in the wind. No matter how far your heart will roam, You always end up where my love lives at home. Maybe this love is older than time, A stubborn river refusing the line. You leave, you break, you come unspun, And every time, I’m still the one. [guitar solo] Yeah, it’s Rhodes Whiplash when you come back in, A beautiful fracture turning into a hymn. You forget me, then you fall in again, Like the night remembers where the stars have been. No matter how far your heart will roam, You always end up where my love lives at home. You go, you fade, you lose the thread, Then find your way back to my bed. Over and over, I let you in— My lover again, my lover again.
