ABOVE THE CLOUDS [INTRO] They said the sky belonged to balloons Big empty bags beneath the moon Then someone laughed from the back of the room You don’t know what’s coming [VERSE 1] They laughed at wings They laughed at flight They said that steel would never rise Then two men woke above the clouds With spinning thunder all around [PRE-CHORUS] No ransom No gold No reason to run You came here to witness What I’ve become [CHORUS] ABOVE THE CLOUDS ABOVE THE STORM A MACHINE WHERE NOTHING SHOULD BE BORN OVER THE OCEAN INTO THE SUN THE FUTURE HAD ALREADY BEGUN [VERSE 2] Across the mountains Across the sea A black machine moved silently They broke away They watched it fall Into the storm And that was all [BREAK] Gone Gone Gone from the sky [VERSE 3] Then one day a balloon came down Falling fast above the crowd Something black broke through the gray Caught the wreck and pulled it away [CHORUS] ABOVE THE CLOUDS ABOVE THE STORM THE MACHINE THEY SAID COULD NOT BE BORN OVER THE OCEAN INTO THE SUN THE FUTURE HAD ALREADY BEGUN [OUTRO] No revenge No final word Only engines could be heard Higher Higher Out of sight The world looked up And learned to fly.
