Black River Run

[Verse] The black river runs where the moonlight don’t shine A graveyard of whispers An old crooked line There’s bones in the reeds They don’t ask for a name The current won’t judge But it plays at the game [Chorus] Oh Black River Take me down Swallow my soul where the shadows drown No prayers No candles No righteous sun— Just the dark Cold waters Black River Run [Verse 2] I met a man with a scar on his grin Said “Boy This river don’t care where you’ve been.” He laughed like the wind through a hollow tree Then faded away Like a ghost set free [Prechorus] And the banjo wails Like a wolf in the pine Feet hit the dirt Keeping time Keeping time [Chorus] Oh Black River Take me down Swallow my soul where the shadows drown No prayers No candles No righteous sun— Just the dark Cold waters Black River Run [Bridge] The lanterns swing low The gallows don’t creak This town’s full of secrets the dead never speak But the river remembers And it sings its tune Under the howl of a blood-red moon
