[Verse] In the desert by the river he stands With the fire in his heart and sands in his hands Proclaiming the one who is greater than all John speaks the truth to the people enthrall [Verse 2] He says I baptize with water so pure But there's a mightier one for sure With a cleansing touch of spirit and flame He’ll light up the darkness and clear out your shame [Chorus] Prepare the way make the path straight The one who’s coming holds your fate With winnowing fork he'll clear the threshing floor Gathering grain throwing chaff out the door [Verse 3] The crowd's hearts wonder is he the one But John says no and points to the son I’m unworthy to even untie his shoes Hear God's promise of life changing news [Verse 4] His axe's at the root that tree will fall With every word you heed his call Change your heart let God's spirit renew Prepare for the one who’s faithful and true [Bridge] He'll baptize in the spirit cleanse your sin His kingdom’s near let new life begin With justice and power he’s bringing the dawn Burning the chaff till the darkness is gone
