I'm sitting by the water's edge with sand between my toes tonight The waves keep crashing on the shore like they can't hold themselves inside The tide pulls back and takes with it these broken bits of colored glass Like all the things I tried to keep but couldn't make them last I wish that I could be like that small enough to drift away Too light to fight the current back too worn to want to stay Let the water carry me let it take the weight I hold Let me move without a choice of who I'm supposed to be Sometimes I think the ocean knows how easy I could disappear Some nights I feel more like the waves than anything that's standing here I'm always moving, never still breaking on the things they see Pulling back when I get close to who I thought I'd be I wish that I could be like that small enough to drift away Too light to fight the current back too worn to want to stay Let the water carry me let it take the weight I hold Let me move without a choice of who I'm supposed to be Maybe I could let it take me maybe I could finally go Be nothing but the salt and foam and never have to know What it's like to hold together what it costs to stay in place But here I am I'm still here watching waves The ocean says the things I can't its rhythm knows the words I hide The cold is climbing up my legs a slow invite to feel nothing inside The water keeps on asking me and still I stay
