The Unnamed - Episode 7 — Which Version

V5.5

[intro - cold electronic fades, something warmer creeps in underneath, not warm exactly] [verse 1 - male vocal, sung, quieter than episode 6, the urgency gone, replaced by something more careful] I pull her to the side away from whoever that is she doesn't resist like she knew I'd choose this I ask her what she meant which version would return she looks at me the way you look at someone who's almost remembered something and you don't want to scare it off [pre-chorus - synth softens slightly, strings try to enter but don't quite make it] she says - "you've been here before not once not twice you always make it this far and then ----" she stops like the next word costs something [chorus - electronic but with more texture now, controlled emotion] which version of me walked these walls before which version sat down and stopped looking for the door which version gave up which version stayed which version wrote something on his own wrist and then forgot what it said [verse 2 - more internal, piecing things together] I look down at my wrist the letters catching light I've read them a hundred times I never thought about the shape of them the way the Y curves the way the E leans slightly left I know that lean I've seen it somewhere she watches me looking doesn't say a word just lets me sit inside the almost [pre-chorus - tension building, the almost becoming something] she says - "the ones who make it out aren't the ones who find the answer they're the ones who stop needing it so badly" [chorus - fuller, something cracking open underneath the cold] which version of me walked these walls before which version sat down and stopped looking for the door which version gave up which version stayed which version wrote something on his own wrist and then forgot what it said [bridge - electronics drop, just a low hum, voice exposed] I ask her how she knows all this she's quiet for a long time then --- "because someone told me once in a corridor that looked exactly like this one and I didn't listen either not the first time" not the first time [outro - electronics return slowly, something unresolved building] I want to ask her more but the door opens behind us and the person she was with is standing in the frame and he's looking at me not like a stranger looks not curious not careful like someone who's been waiting for me to finally show up [spoken tag - flat, the weight of it landing slowly] he knows him. not his name. not his face. something older than both. two doors - does he finally turn around and face the stranger? or does he ask her one more question first? leave your choice below. only here. [end - single electronic tone, three beats, silence]
