A Man, Not a Lifeboat

I may not show it, came from less than nothing. Fought for scraps till I could buy boot straps. Only got ahead from pushing and shoving. Days behind me when I’d shoot craps for food scraps. Your world’s crazy and mine seems so stable. You lean on me even though I’m walking a tight rope. Glad to help you as much as I’m able, but so you know, I’m a man, not a lifeboat. When we first met, you had it all. Then all your cracks began to show and crumble. You’d land on me each time you’d fall. Now it seems we barely walk without a stumble. I’m treading water, you throw me a boulder. I’m only human; I don’t know what they told you. The water freezing will only get colder. I’m on a lifeboat and it just can’t hold two.
