[female crying] People are ungrateful— I have known this for a long time. Yet I kept hoping they would change. How many good deeds I did for them. My judgment was always forgiveness, my stance was pity, my task was always to help. But what did I receive in return? Sideways glances, mockery, pretense. People took advantage of my kindness. [chorus] My heart is hot as flame and cold as ice. Pity is bound to indifference. I can love, but those who are unworthy will be burned. When they did not get what they wanted from me, they slandered me, forgetting how much I had helped them. I can grant people grace. But I can also sentence them to death. That is when I changed my stance toward those I had once shown mercy to. They began to suffer in agony. Illness and failure plagued them. They came close to death. They screamed, begging me to help them, as before. But I was already far from their suffering. I had become completely indifferent to them. I helped them all, and none returned the kindness that I gave. They turned their faces, smirked, and spurned the hand that sought to save. I thought that they would come to see the good I tried to do. But all their gratitude to me was mockery and rue. My heart is forged of fire and frost, of pity bound to scorn. I love—but those who count the cost will wish they were not born. They took, and took, and never gave, then slandered me for sport. They thought that I would always save and beg them for their court. But something in me turned to stone the day I walked away. I left them shrieking and alone, and had no words to say. The ones I once forgave with grace now writhe in fevered pain. They call my name and seek my face, but I am deaf again. [female sarcastic laughter] [speaks imperiously] I do not hate them, do not care. They fade like distant cries. I gave them all I had to spare— and now I am the ice. [chorus] My heart is hot as flame and cold as ice. Pity is bound to indifference. I can love, but those who are unworthy will be burned. [female sarcastic laughter]
