I will love thee, O Lord, my strength (Psalm 18)
I will love thee, O Lord, my strength The Lord is my rock, and my fortress and my deliverer; my God, my strength in whom I will trust my buckler, my high tower horn of my salvation who is worthy to be praised I will call upon the Lord’s power so from my enemies shall I be saved The sorrows of death compassed me and the floods of ungodly men made me afraid The sorrows of hell compassed me the snares of death prevented me, yay In distress I called upon the Lord and cried unto my God, I drew near he heard my voice from his temple and my cry came before him (even into his ears) Then the earth shook and trembled the hills’ foundations moved shaken to the bone He was wroth. Smoke rose from his nostrils and fire from his mouth devoured, kindling the coals He bowed the heavens also and he came down nigh and darkness was under his feet And he rode upon a cherub, and did fly yea, he flew upon the wings of the wind. He made darkness a secret place for him dark waters and thick clouds of the sky were his pavillion. At the brightness was before him. His thick clouds passed, (hail stones and coals of fire) The Lord thundered in the heavens vast, (hail stones and coals of fire) and the Highest gave his voice; (hail stones and coals of fire) Yea, he sent out his arrows and scattered them and he shot out lightnings and unsettled them. Then channels of waters were seen coming forth foundations of the world were uncovered also by thy rebuke, O Lord at the blast of the breath of thy nostrils He sent from above, he took me, he drew me out of many waters He delivered me from my strong enemy and from them which hated me for they were too strong for me They prevented me in the day of my calamity but the Lord was my stay He brought me forth, he brought me also into a large place he delivered me for he delighted in me. The Lord rewarded me according to my righteousness And he hath recompensed me according to my hands’ cleanness. For I have kept the ways of the Lord and from my God have I not wickedly gone forth. For all his judgments were before me and I did not put away his statutes from me. Before him I walk uprightly, and I kept myself from mine iniquity So the Lord recompensed me according to my righteousness, And of my hands in his eyesight. according to their cleanness. With the merciful thou wilt show thyself merciful with the upright thou wilt show thyself upright With the pure thou wilt show thyself pure With the crooked thou wilt show thyself crooked For thou wilt bring down high looks but wilt save the afflicted people My Lord God will enlighten my darkness For thou wilt light my candle For by thee I have run through a troop and by my God have I leaped over a wall As for God, his word is perfect the way of the Lord is tried he is a buckler to those that trust in him for all they rely. For who is God save the Lord? or who is a rock save our God? God girds me with strength and God makes my way perfect God makes my feet like mountain goats’ feet and like them he setteth me up on high places That my feet did not slip! God teaches my hands of war so if I lift a bow of steel I could break it in my arms Can you imagine the strength I feel? Thou gavest me a shield to be saved Thy right hand supports me when I’m parched Thy gentleness hath made me great That the narrow path under me is enlarged That my feet did not slip! I have pursued mine enemies to their doom! For I have overtaken them Until they were fully consumed Did I not turn again! My enemies cannot rise for their wound at length And they are fallen under my feet For to me, you gave battle strength To subdue those that rise against me And you gave me the necks of my enemies that I could destroy them who hate me. None would save them when they cried out The unfaithful cried out to all, even to the Lord but he knew not the ones who did shout And he did not answer their words. Then I beat them to dust before the wind I did cast them out as the dirt in the streets Thou brought me power over heathens: From the strivings of the people, you delivered me! a people I know not shall serve me As soon as they hear of me, they shall obey Foreigners will submit unto me Foreign godless ways will fade away Now thou art their lord and their king In their small places will they be afraid
