RADIO STATION 11:11 S1E 2: “The Voice on the Line”
[INTRO - TELEPHONE RING, VINYL CRACKLE, SOFT ELECTRIC PIANO] [Phone rings once] [Phone rings twice] [Click] FEMALE VOICE, whispered: Hello? [VERSE 1] Two in the morning, blue light on the ceiling City’s asleep but I can’t close my eyes Phone started ringing with nobody calling No number showing, just a line of white I picked it up and nobody answered Just breathing softly on the other side Then came a voice I had never heard Saying my name like we’d met in another life [PRE-CHORUS] I said, “Who are you?” You said, “Don’t ask me that” I said, “Where are you?” You said, “Not where you’re at” Then the clock changed And the room went still You whispered something I remember it still [CHORUS] There was a voice on the line Calling me from somewhere in time Said, “Don’t answer when the phone rings” But I already crossed that line There was a voice on the line And it sounded like you and I Like somebody knew my future Before I ever lived tonight [POST-CHORUS] Ooh, I heard you Ooh, I heard you Through the static in the night Ooh, I heard you Ooh, I heard you And I can’t forget that voice tonight [VERSE 2] You said the rain would start at midnight But there wasn’t a cloud in the sky You said I’d find an old photograph Behind the picture hanging by my bedside I laughed because it sounded crazy Then I moved the frame and froze There was a photograph I’d never seen With a handwritten date I didn’t know [PRE-CHORUS] I said, “Who are you?” You said, “Someone you knew” I said, “When?” You said, “Not yet, but soon” Then the line went quiet Like the world held its breath And somewhere in the distance I heard my own voice next [CHORUS] There was a voice on the line Calling me from somewhere in time Said, “Don’t answer when the phone rings” But I already crossed that line There was a voice on the line And it sounded like you and I Like somebody knew my future Before I ever lived tonight [BRIDGE - HALF-TIME, SPARSE BASS] VOICE ON PHONE: Listen carefully. FEMALE: I’m listening. VOICE: Tomorrow at 11:11… FEMALE: What happens? VOICE: You meet someone. FEMALE: Who? VOICE: Me. [Silence] FEMALE: But I don’t know you. VOICE: I know. [Beat returns] [FINAL CHORUS] There’s a voice on the line Still calling me from somewhere in time Every time the clock hits eleven I feel you reaching through the night There’s a voice on the line And I don’t know if I should reply But if you’re somewhere in my future Maybe you’re already in my life [OUTRO - PHONE STATIC] [Phone rings] [She doesn’t answer] [Phone rings again] [She answers] VOICE: You weren’t supposed to answer. [CLICK] [Low radio static fades in] [Very faint DJ voice underneath:] 11:11… [END]
