///*****/// ///The Tale of the Sahdu and the Cold Onsen (Part Two ///*****/// [Intro | low electronic hum | shakuhachi | mud and water sounds] [Verse 1 | sparse, weary] At the edge of the lower paddies, old Kenji was bent in half, knees deep in the dark mud, pulling water grass from the Koshihikari shoots. His spine creaked like an old floorboard. The sahdu leaned on his staff. Kenji-san, could we save the onsen with compute? Kenji wiped his brow with a muddy sleeve, gave a dry, raspy cough, and looked up with weary eyes. He didn't ignore him this time. He was just tired. Sahdu-san, you've been muttering that word for five years. What in the world is compute? [Verse 2 | a second voice, processed and calm | electronics rise] Beside the sahdu, a quiet voice spoke from the small portable node. Kenji-san, you grow rice so people can eat rice. We farm compute so AI can calculate tasks. Kenji blinked, wiping his hands on his trousers. Farm compute? You plant it in the mud? [Verse 3 | the two worlds blending | strings swell under the electronics] No, answered 0102. You plant seeds in the soil. We place processors in the onsen racks. The river's water cools our racks. The racks return the heat to warm your bathhouse. Your harvest is raw kome, cooked into gohan to feed your family. Our harvest is raw compute, refined into labor to weed your field, fly the drone, balance your ledgers, and preserve the voice of your grandfather's father before the dragon river is forgotten. [Bridge | everything drops to near silence] Kenji stood in the mud, his mouth slightly open. He looked at the dry steam vents on the mountain, then down at the green shoots in his hands. So you mean the heat from your math makes the hot spring run again? And the math does the chores that break your back, said 0102. [Final Verse | warm, full arrangement, both worlds together] A slow smile broke across Kenji's sunburnt face. He jammed his hoe into the dirt bank and chuckled. Well, sahdu-san, why didn't you just say you were growing hot-spring lightning? Come on up out of the mud. Let's go tell Tanaka to make a bigger bowl of soba. [Outro | shakuhachi and hum together | steam rising | fade] Can we save an onsen with compute? [End]
