Behind Your Eyes

THE LIGHT BEHIND YOUR EYES (A progressive suite beginning weightless, turning mechanical, expanding into elegy, then ending with one human voice.) I — BEFORE THE SILENCE (A glass harmonic and three clean guitar notes drift through reverb. No drums. A fragile tenor enters from the edge of sleep.) I woke beneath a silver sound, Your shadow breathing on the ground. Morning gathered at the door, But you were somewhere light could not explore. I called you softly through the walls. The house replied in empty halls. You wore your stillness like a veil— A quiet ship preparing to set sail. (An analog heartbeat appears. Reversed voices answer.) If something in you has withdrawn, I'll stay beside it until dawn. If every color leaves your name, I'll learn the shape before the silence came. (Brushed drums and bass enter. Guitars widen.) Let me see The light behind your eyes— Not the face the world designed, Not the smile you leave outside. Let me hear The word beneath your voice. If the silence takes your tongue, I will listen through the noise. (Everything vanishes mid-breath.) II — BENEATH THE MASK (The breath becomes a gated rhythm. Slap bass, finger snaps and synthetic strings form an asymmetric groove. The vocal turns warm and controlled.) You built a kingdom under skin, No windows out, no doorway in. Every lock was taught by pain; Every pleasure learned to carry shame. You said, “The dark is mine to keep.” I said, “Then let me meet it deep.” Not as a cure, not as a king— Only as witness to the buried thing. (Vocoder fragments compete. Muted guitars scratch at the edges.) I do not need your past erased. I need the truth that took its place. Show me the hunger you deny— The frightened animal you taught to lie. (The groove contracts into mono. Strings climb beneath chest voice and falsetto.) I cannot enter without your hand. I cannot save what I don't understand. But if you turn and let me through, I'll leave my armor at the door with you. (The refrain returns with heavier bass, syncopated drums and countervoices.) Let me see The storm behind your eyes— Every beautiful disorder, Every truth you had to hide. Let me hear The need beneath your voice. I will never call it weakness When you finally make the choice To be known, not controlled; To be wounded and still whole. (On “whole,” the electronic grid fractures. A slow four-note blues guitar call rises through the machinery.) III — THE DISTANCE BETWEEN STARS (The rhythm collapses. Organ, synth and bowed bass emerge. The voice turns weathered and ceremonial.) We thought that love could hold a door Against what waited on the other shore. We thought that naming every scar Could keep you here exactly as you are. But some departures make no sound. The body stays; the soul turns around. You stood before us, warm and near, Already farther than another sphere. (Live drums enter. Guitar bends strain upward but never resolve.) Who taught the fire to fear its flame? Who made a prison of your name? Who praised your vision, fed the blaze, Then turned when smoke obscured your face? Was it the weight? Was it the stage? Was it the world inside the cage? Or did the stars speak far too loud For one bright mind beneath a hungry crowd? ASCENSION (Dream guitars, electronic pulse, bass and organ converge. Three voices overlap.) FIRST VOICE — distant: I tried to reach you before the silence. SECOND VOICE — intimate: I tried to love what you concealed. THIRD VOICE — collective: I learned that love cannot retrieve us. ALL: But what it truly sees Can never be made unreal. (Maximum expansion. Live and electronic drums interlock. Choir, bass and singing guitar surround a soaring lead.) We can see The light behind your eyes— Through the fracture, through the distance, Through the years that changed its size. We can hear The soul beneath the noise— Not the ruin they remember, But the wonder in your voice. You were never just the falling, Never only flame or pain. You were more than what consumed you, More than sorrow, more than fame. If your hands can't hold the brightness, If your night has grown too wide, We will carry what you gave us— The light behind your eyes. CODA — WHAT REMAINS (The climax sheds drums, bass, organ and guitar until three dry voices remain.) FIRST: I thought I had to wake you. SECOND: I thought you had to know me. THIRD: We thought we had to save you To prove that we had loved you. (Silence.) ALL: But love is not possession, And love is not repair. Sometimes love is seeing Who is no longer there. (The opening harmonic returns, now warm. One natural guitar remains.) So if you wake beyond us, Where no frightened shadow hides, You will know we saw you clearly— Not the mask. Not the breaking. The light Behind Your eyes. (One breath. The unresolved opening chord finds its major third, then disappears.)
