Their Place

THEIR PLACE [Intro — female voice alone, very close, soft and restrained] I don’t let many people in. But when I open the door… [solo violin enters with one fragile sustained note] I don’t know how to close it again. [Violin — quiet three-note motif, unfinished, almost trembling] [Verse 1] There are people who pass through a life. And then there are those I make a place for. Not for a day. Forever. [Violin — soft answer, delicate and unresolved] [Pre-Chorus] And when they leave… their place doesn’t disappear. It stays there. Empty. [Violin — one long aching note, fading into silence] [Chorus] Forever… their place stays there. Forever… no one else can take it. And when their absence becomes bigger than me… I fill their place with tears. With tears… forever. [Violin — descending phrase, gentle vibrato, like a restrained cry] [Post-Chorus] Forever… [Violin answer] With tears… [Violin answer] Forever. [Verse 2] There are people I let in much deeper. Where very few ever reach. I make a place for them without thinking about the day it might become empty. I was there when they needed me. [Violin stops completely] And maybe one day they simply stopped needing me. [long silence] But my heart doesn’t work that way. [Violin returns very softly] It doesn’t take the place back. It doesn’t give it to somebody else. It keeps it. [Violin — unfinished motif] [Pre-Chorus] So they leave. And I… I keep their place. [Violin — recurring motif, slightly more fragile] [Chorus] Forever… their place stays there. Forever… no one else can take it. And when their absence becomes bigger than me… I fill their place with tears. With tears… forever. [Violin — slowly rising, then falling away] [Bridge — female voice almost spoken, violin barely audible] Sometimes I wish I could stop letting people in. Close every door. Become a hermit. Because a closed heart can’t collect any more empty places. [Violin — one low sustained note] But then… it can’t make room for anyone either. [long silence] So I look again. At all those places. The ones that are full. And the ones that will stay empty. [pause] And sometimes… I can only fill them with tears. [long silence] [SOLO VIOLIN — deeply emotional, sorrowful and exposed. The violin now becomes the voice of the grief. Begin almost inaudibly with the recurring three-note motif, fragile and hesitant. Let the bow sound close and human, with gentle breath-like pauses between phrases. Slowly stretch the motif into a long aching melody. Use expressive slides, subtle trembling vibrato and sustained notes that feel as if they are trying not to break. Let one phrase rise as if holding back tears, then collapse softly downward. No virtuosity, no fast runs, no dramatic cinematic swell. The sadness must feel intimate, raw and real. Allow small imperfections in the bowing, as though the violin itself is crying. Build toward one long, painful high note that almost cracks, hold it just long enough to hurt, then let it fall slowly into lower notes. Return to the original three-note motif, but leave the final note unresolved. Let the last sound fade into complete silence.] [long silence] [Final Chorus — voice returns softer, almost emptied out after crying] Forever… their place stays there. Forever… no one else can take it. Even when their absence becomes bigger than me… I fill their place with tears. With tears… [long pause] forever. [Violin — one quiet, aching answer] [Outro — violin becomes slightly warmer, but still fragile] And then there’s you. [pause] I look at my heart… and your place is still full. You don’t fill the places they left behind. You never had to. Because you too… have your place. [Violin begins the familiar unfinished motif] You’re still here. [long pause] Still here. [FINAL SOLO VIOLIN — very soft. Repeat the same motif heard throughout the song. For the first time, add the missing final note and let the melody gently resolve. No triumph, no happiness — only relief. Hold the final note with warm, fragile vibrato until it disappears into silence.]
