I see the crowds floodin streets with a fire in their chest yellin “free the kids,” while the system won’t let 'em rest news clips flashin, opinions pressed but I’m stuck in the middle, feelin both sides stressed I got fam that hopped fences under moonlight skies and boys I bled with who salute with pride I wore the uniform, I took the ride but I still hear my abuela prayin not to be denied my skin brown, my boots laced I speak in two tongues, still feel outta place one side scream laws, one scream grace and I’m tryin to find truth in a crooked space flashbacks hit, house filled with shouts mom beggin, dad throwin fists, I dont know what about I was small, couldn’t speak, heart filled with doubt eyes fixed on the floor, tryna block it out That's what I see, both sides who made me going rabid The people that raised that kid going at it and now I see that fear in them border cells kids holdin in tears with no words to yell and it’s hard to tell where justice dwells when both sides got stories they’ll never tell I met ICE with hearts that hate the harm and protestors who weaponize every alarm I get love from both and shade from both one calls me a hero, one calls me a ghost too soldier for the culture, too street for the Corps I’m not sure what I’m standin for anymore trained to protect, but I question the war when my people are the ones they detain at the door they draw lines in the sand that divide my breath I pledge to defend, but what’s left to protect? it’s not clean, it’s not pure, it’s a layered mess and I carry every flag like a weight on my chest and now when a stranger stops me just to say “thank you for your service” I nod polite, but inside I feel nervous like, which part you mean? the badge or the burden? the boots or the roots that this flag made uncertain?
