Back in the day when island life was simply uncomplicated I knew a family the shicks, pure of heart where sea breeze guesthouse was located My dear old dad Harry told me a story once A story quite confronting When guests would come and stay and Garney and Ray would take them wild pig hunting So the tale goes this way back in the nineteen sixty’s Dad’s old wartime mate Had come to visit us And pig hunting they thought was great Garney and Ray had two dogs , they were their pride and joy No better pig dogs had lived Since they were bouncing boys Well Dad and Uncle Noll Both crack shots Snipers in the war Grabbed 303 rifles with Garney They went to explore Now the landscape was very tough with steep hills and valleys and boulders through heavy brush The pig dogs had found some pigs up on smoking tree ridge The men could here them barking and crossed the wooden bridge The dogs had the wild pigs cornered in a rocky gully So Noll took the first shot Oh what a folly The bullet went through the pig and then killed the dog Poor Garney was shattered so he sat on a log Meanwhile the old boar charged and pinned dog number two at rocky run against a boulder Garney had to put him down He’d started with two dogs and now they were getting no older When they got back to Seabreeze And delivered the dead porker His Wife Mae said hey where’s the dogs Maxwell And poor Garney said we’ve had a shocker So Dad and Noll and Garney broke into Freddie Pooles savage home brew locker Told far-fetched stories night so damn bad To avoid them feeling so damn sad Morning light not a pretty sight Three fellas legs up an epic night to forget So that’s the story of two dogs And an old snipers last regret Here ends the story of wild sows and boars And the visiting sniper on Lord Howe Island Who came back from the war There is a motto to this story Of bravery and of vanquished glory Don’t take your best dogs on pig hunts for guests Who try to outdo and see who’s best Oh The sniper who regrets The sniper who regrets Bye bye two doggies How much is that doggie in the window (Guitar and ukulele outtro)
