Disease of the Century We are all diseased - Plagued by the illness of our age. The disease of the century. As a matter of fact, We know too little about this contagion. We only know one thing: It has disguised itself as Depression. This disease can be lethal. How many have ended their lives Through suicide? And still - no cure, no healing. It infects us so deeply, Only those naturally sensitive Can truly feel its symptoms. It has swept across mankind, Perhaps sparing a few: Indigenous souls of Tibet, Or the Aborigines of New Zealand. The rest of us? Our minds are infected By a quiet, totalitarian defect. It has become a part of us. So much so - The very part of us that might recognize it Is the one most affected. This virus takes many forms: When there’s a void inside That nothing substantial can fill. When the soul is sighing And we cancel it With loud music. When there is time - But it’s already been frazzled in vain. When there is a phone - But no one hears you out. When the only soul that understands Is your house pet. When there’s appetite, But no pleasure in eating. When the news no longer surprises - Only terrifies. When disappointment in people grows, And they turn to you only in despair. When you ask God questions, But hear no reply. When you search for answers In horoscopes and constellations. When you attend church services Out of obligation. When you cope with apathy By lighting candles. When you search endless websites For solutions - Only to realize It’s all in vain. And now - The thing you desire most Is your last day. All these symptoms above… And still, You think The disease isn’t to blame?
