God at The Funeral

Nobody knew what to say So everybody whispered God was at the funeral Crying through a hundred eyes Standing by the casket Hearing every last goodbye In the daughter holding flowers In the brother staring down In the hands that would not let go In the silence all around The room was full of sorrow But not empty of Life Something was still breathing Behind every pair of eyes God was at the funeral Not somewhere up above God was in the shaking hands And in the ache of love The body had gone quiet But Life had not gone far God was at the funeral Looking through us all Someone told a funny story And everybody laughed Then the laughter broke to crying When the memory came back Someone touched the folded jacket Someone kissed the wooden frame Someone whispered I still love you Like love could hear the name Maybe grief is what it feels like When form is torn away And Love is still here reaching For what it cannot make stay God was at the funeral Not somewhere up above God was in the shaking hands And in the ache of love The body had gone quiet But Life had not gone far God was at the funeral Looking through us all The body without the Spirit Is dead We say the words And still we stand Beside the body As if Life Is what we're burying But what if Life Was never in the ground? What if dust Was all we laid down? Outside the cars were waiting The world kept moving on Birds were still above the trees Morning still became dawn And every chest around that grave Kept rising with the breath As if Life itself was saying I am not What you call death God was at the funeral Crying through our eyes God was in the empty chair And every last goodbye The body had gone silent But silence is not gone God was at the funeral And Life Was carrying on We buried the body Not the Life
