[Intro] [Instrumental: low church organ, distant choir, rising strings] [Verse 1] At the old stone door, I laid my worries down A candle held its breath beneath the painted crown You found me where the vaulted arches meet And called my name above the marching feet [Pre-Chorus] I came with empty hands, with dust upon my sleeve You opened every locked room I was afraid to leave [Chorus] Carry me through the thunder, carry me through the flame I will lift my heart before You, I will speak Your name When the ground gives way beneath me, when the night is long You are the steady shelter, You are my song [Instrumental: pipe organ solo with driving Turkish percussion and soaring strings] [Verse 2] The choir rose like morning from the wooden pews A thousand small yeses, none of them to lose You turned my grief to courage, my fear to bread And put a road of mercy where my steps had led [Pre-Chorus] I came with empty hands, with dust upon my sleeve You opened every locked room I was afraid to leave [Chorus] Carry me through the thunder, carry me through the flame I will lift my heart before You, I will speak Your name When the ground gives way beneath me, when the night is long You are the steady shelter, You are my song [Bridge] If I am lost, be the doorway If I am weak, be the ground Let every voice in this sanctuary Raise the hope that I have found [Instrumental: grand organ performance, white-voice choir, distorted violin layers, bagpipes] [Final Chorus] Carry me through the thunder, carry me through the flame I will lift my heart before You, I will speak Your name When the ground gives way beneath me, when the night is long You are the steady shelter, You are my song Carry me through the thunder, carry me through the flame Every breath becomes a promise, every heart a refrain When the ground gives way beneath me, still my hope is strong You are the steady shelter, You are my song [Outro] [Instrumental: organ and choir resolve slowly into the cathedral hush]
