Feynman 2-1.3: The Amalgamation

[Intro: Drum Break – Crisp and Funky] [Piano chords enter – bright and energetic] (One set of phenomena...) (One set...) Yeah. Let's put the puzzle together. [Verse 1: Clear, Rhythmic Flow] At first... the phenomena of nature were roughly divided into classes: Heat. Electricity. Mechanics. Magnetism. Properties of substances. Chemical phenomena. Light or optics. X-rays. Nuclear physics. Gravitation. Meson phenomena. Et cetera. However... the aim is to see complete nature As different aspects of ONE set of phenomena. (One set...) To find the laws behind experiment. To amalgamate these classes. [Chorus: Melodic / Catchy] [Scratches: "Amalgamate" / "Combine"] Historically, we have always been able to combine them. But as time goes on... new things are found. We were amalgamating very well... When all of a sudden... X-rays were found. (New things found!) Then we combined some more... and mesons were found. [Verse 2: Driving Beat] Therefore, at any stage of the game... It always looks rather messy. A great deal is amalgamated... But there are always many wires or threads Hanging out in all directions. (Hanging out... in all directions.) That is the situation today. [Bridge: Bass Breakdown – Funky] Some historic examples... are the following: First: Take heat and mechanics. When atoms are in motion, the more motion, the more heat. So heat... can be represented by the laws of mechanics. Another tremendous amalgamation... Electricity. Magnetism. And Light. Different aspects of the same thing... Which we call today... the Electromagnetic Field. (The Field) [Verse 3: Building Back Up] And chemical phenomena... properties of substances... The behavior of atomic particles... That is the quantum mechanics of chemistry. The question is, of course... Is it possible to amalgamate everything? To discover that this world represents different aspects of ONE thing? Nobody knows. (Nobody knows) [Outro: Fade out with Ad-libs] We keep trying to put the jigsaw puzzle together. Is there a border to the puzzle? Unknown. It will never be known until we finish the picture. (If ever...) What are things made of? How few elements are there? (The Amalgamation.) (One set...) [Fade]
