A Flicker That Refused to Leave

(Verse 1) It started as a quiet thought, The kind you almost miss, Half a shape without a name, A maybe more than this. I turned away, I closed the door, Said “not today, not now,” But something lingered in the room That I could not disallow. (Pre-Chorus) I told myself it didn’t fit, Not clean, not clear, not mine But it kept leaning on my mind Like it had all the time. (Chorus) Just a flicker that refused to leave, Not a fire, not a need, Just a quiet little “what if” Growing roots inside of me. I don’t know what it wants to be, I don’t know if it’s my style, But it keeps on sitting with me Like it’s willing to wait a while. (Verse 2) I tried to shape it into lines That I already knew, But every time I forced its form It slipped my fingers through. It doesn’t speak in structures yet, It doesn’t follow rules, It just exists between the cracks Of things I think I choose. (Pre-Chorus) And maybe that’s what makes it stay, Not loud enough to fight Just soft enough to still be there At the edge of every night. (Chorus) Just a flicker that refused to leave, Not a plan, not a dream, Just a stubborn little presence In the spaces in between. I don’t know how to hold it yet, Or where it’s meant to land, But it hasn’t asked for answers Just a place to gently stand. (Bridge) What if it’s not supposed to fit? What if it bends the frame? What if the shape I’m holding on to Is the thing that needs to change? …what if it’s not too early… …what if it’s not too late… What if it’s just been waiting For me to hesitate? (Final Chorus) Just a flicker that refused to leave, Still not loud, still not clear, But it stayed when I went quiet So I guess it matters here. I don’t know what it will become, I don’t know what it needs, But it kept on choosing presence… So I’m choosing it with me.
