[Intro — spoken, almost silence] God is Spirit... So why when somebody says God do we see a face? Why do we look up and imagine Someone somewhere? Maybe... we needed a face. [Banjo begins, single repeating figure] Did we use Jesus to give Spirit a face something our eyes could hold something our minds could place? When maybe Jesus was pointing the other way... Not toward the face but what was behind it. [Beat slowly enters] The Father that dwelleth in me He doeth the works Not this flesh Not these hands Not this name Not this dust Something unseen moving the seen Spirit wearing form Life looking through eyes [Chorus] Behind every face behind every name before we were different the Life was the same Behind every body behind every place Maybe he wasn't showing us the face of God... Maybe he was showing us what's behind every face [Banjo break — voice fragments underneath] I in you... you in me... one... one... one... [Verse] He said I can of mine own self do nothing And somehow we heard Worship the man But what if he was emptying the man? What if the vessel was never the source? What if the miracle wasn't that God became one human... but that one human knew exactly what was living him? [Beat drops out] The body without the Spirit... is dead. So tell me... which one is Life? [Beat returns heavier] We painted the face carved the face hung the face lifted the face toward heaven While the words kept whispering The Father dwelleth in me And ye in me And I... in you. [Chorus — wider] Behind every face behind every name before we were different the Life was the same Behind every body behind every place Maybe he wasn't showing us the face of God... Maybe he was showing us what's behind every face [Bridge — spoken, spacious] What if “he that hath seen me hath seen the Father” wasn't asking us to look harder at Jesus? What if it was asking us to see through him? Past the skin past the name past the carpenter past the person to the invisible Life doing the living. [Music nearly disappears] And then... he turned toward us. At that day ye shall know I am in my Father and ye in me and I... in you. [Long silence] So maybe we gave Spirit a face... because Spirit was too infinite to imagine. And maybe Jesus stood inside a face trying to show us... God never needed one. [Final chorus — layered voices, banjo opening up] Behind every face behind every name one breath moving through countless frames No image can hold It no body contain The Spirit is invisible... but look... Life is everywhere. [Outro — spoken] God is Spirit. Maybe Jesus wasn't showing us what God looks like. Maybe... he was showing us where to look.
