Woke in the hour when the candles drown Wide awake but my limbs are clay Breath like a stone and the dark pressed down A crooked shape where the shadows lay Scream with no throat Wake with no eyes Every night she rides Every night I die Hagridden, hagridden Pinned in the black Hagridden, hagridden She won't give me back She climbs the bedpost on knuckled hands Hair hanging down like the river weed Sits on my chest where the heartbeat stands Counting the breaths that I'm yet to need Scream with no throat Wake with no eyes Every night she rides Every night I die Hagridden, hagridden Pinned in the black Hagridden, hagridden She won't give me back Doctor says it's a trick of the brain Chemicals stuck between dream and day But doctor never has felt the reins Pulled through his teeth till the dawn turns grey Don't close your eyes Don't close your eyes She has learned the way In behind them Ride, ride, the night mare rides Over the downs where the sleepers lie Ride, ride, from bed to bed Saddled on the chest of the living dead Hagridden, hagridden Pinned in the black Hagridden, hagridden She won't give me back The sun comes up through the curtain lace And she's still sitting there Wearing my face
