At his side during the service was Samuel Reed, an older E-Person who works as a Post-Continuity Counselor - commonly called a 'Chaplain' - helping families say goodbye when technical decommissioning and personal loss no longer fit traditional rituals. Samuel's remark that 'the parts were never the point' stays with Ray. Most of Elias's functional components had already been removed and returned, yet the mourners had grieved for a person, not for machinery. Back at his desk, the word 'returned' reminds Ray of the false entry he made in the previous case. He begins pulling out old handwritten registers and comparing them. Different years. Different names. Different parts. But again and again, the same kind of missing history appears between one documented life and the next. For the first time, Ray is no longer looking at an isolated inconsistency. He is looking at a pattern. ******************************************************************************************** [Intro] Last family left at seven-ten. Samuel stayed beside the door. Three handshakes. Two names repeated. One last look across the floor. The screen went dark. The flowers stayed. Elias Ward, above the frame. [Verse 1] Voice unit gone. Sensors returned. Reclaimed. Destroyed. Released. Returned. I stop there. One word I know I wrote wrong. One word still under my hand. [Transition] I pull the book from forty. Then another. Then one more. Not looking for the V-nine now. Just looking. Watching how the lines behave. [Chorus] Different year. Different name. Different part. Same kind of gap. Different file. Different hand. Same clean end. Same kind of gap. [Instrumental Break] [Verse 3] One page. Then another. I read it twice. Nothing wrong. Nothing right either. Returned. Then nothing. Another name. Another year. Same missing middle. I go back. Further this time. I haven’t done this in years. Not like this. [Chorus] Different year. Different name. Different part. Same kind of gap. Different file. Different hand. Same clean end. Same kind of gap. [Bridge] I thought I was looking for the same part. I wasn’t. Different models. Different makers. Different years. Same missing middle. I mark one page. Then another. Then another. Five cases. Six years. [Outro] Five cases. Different names. Different parts. Same kind of gap. I close the book. Open it again. What if...
