House Cat ------------- He sleeps upon the cushioned seat A striped predator at rest And every care fades in the heat Lost in some distant, dreaming quest His whiskers stir without a sound What does the sleeping hunter hound? He twitches once, then finds his place A wild heart wearing a tame face Perhaps the leaves part under paws Beneath the weight of something large Where every rustle gives him pause And darkness presses, taking charge The stars above like tiny mice Run soft and quiet, once, then twice They scatter quick without a trace Across the vast and empty space A fly taps hard against the pane And both his ears go sharp and straight Then soft and drowsy once again A house cat curled up on the slate He arcs his back into a curve With every muscle, bone, and nerve He stretches out, content, complete And folds himself into the seat Oh, purring soul of hidden ways Who knows what waits in darkened yards You read the world through what it says A graceful mover past all guards Stay close to us, stay warm, stay near Where quiet life is all we hear The sofa holds him, soft and true A little wild in all he'll do --- "House Cat" Copyright © 2026 Rick n' Stolti.
