Best Behaviour
I've always thought that patience Was an easy thing to keep I believe in being thoughtful And in treating people well I can wait without complaining Let the little troubles pass Till somebody takes forever And my patience doesn't last I was doing rather nicely With my generous state of mind Then the day became inconvenient And I left some grace behind I'm on my best behaviour At least I mean to be I have the finest intentions And they usually agree with me I'm patient and considerate As anyone can see It's remarkably easy When nobody disagrees I believe in second chances And the benefit of the doubt In overlooking small mistakes Without pointing every one out I can offer understanding When the trouble isn't mine But when my carefully made plans change I may need a little time I have principles worth keeping I can name them all with pride It's surprising how they tremble When I'm standing on that side I'm on my best behaviour At least I mean to be I have the finest intentions And they usually agree with me I'm patient and considerate As anyone can see It's remarkably easy When nobody disagrees I don't need to be an angel I never claimed to be The kind who's always gracious Whatever comes their way But there's something quite revealing In the moments no one plans When the person I'd like to be Meets the person that I am I'm on my best behaviour Or doing what I can I've always had good intentions Though they don't always go to plan I'm patient and considerate Well, most of the time And when I get a little difficult I'll try to keep that in mind I like to think I'm patient And on most days, I believe it Just don't ask me when I'm hungry Or when something takes too long.
