Five Pounds
[Verse 1] He rode in on a black bay horse With dust on his boots and fire in his course Name like thunder through the county lines Every man in town felt the old bells chime [Pre-Chorus] The sheriff heard it from a man at the door Said, "That outlaw's back, and he wants more" He set his jaw and grabbed his hat Walked into the bar like a loaded trap [Chorus] Five pounds, five pounds For the gun that don't back down Five pounds, five pounds To pull that trigger now Five pounds, five pounds We can settle this in the street Five pounds, five pounds At mid-day, on my feet (five pounds) [Verse 2] He found him slow-drinkin' by the smoke-stained wall Said, "You give yourself up, or you'll answer the call" The outlaw smiled with a colder grin Said, "I came too far to be locked back in" [Pre-Chorus] The room went still, like a held-back breath The sheriff said, "Boy, you choose your death" The outlaw tipped that brim down low Said, "Then step outside and let it show" [Chorus] Five pounds, five pounds For the gun that don't back down Five pounds, five pounds To pull that trigger now Five pounds, five pounds We can settle this in the street Five pounds, five pounds At mid-day, on my feet (five pounds) [Bridge] They paced it off in the hard dirt lane One for the pride, one for the shame The town clock climbed to twelve by one The crowd held still in the hot noon sun Then leather flashed and the silence split The sheriff moved in a blink of it [Final Chorus] Five pounds, five pounds And the whole town held its breath Five pounds, five pounds Fastest gun and sudden death Five pounds, five pounds They called him brave thatβs right Five pounds, five pounds When he drew in the blink of light (five pounds)
