[Verse] When she barks at the water And she barks at the sky And she barks at the shadows That fall on the hillside [Verse] In the late autumn days And she rolls in the grass And she chases the ghosts Of her great shaggy past [Chorus] And it's a good life It's a good life For a dog like Berta White as the snow [interlude] [bluegrass banjo] [Hook] Run, Berta, run Through the fields chasin' sun Run, Berta, run ‘Til the day is done [Verse] When she guards the kid While he is out in the yard When the mailman comes And she barks at the car [Verse] And when she gets tired And when the sun gets low She lays on her blanket And she waits for her bones [Chorus] And it's a good life It's a good life For a dog like Berta White as the snow [instrumental solo] [banjo] [Hook] Run, Berta, run Through the fields into the sun Run, Berta, run ‘Til the day is done [break] [Verse] When the winter wind blows And the night turns to frost She dreams of the summer And the sticks she has tossed [Verse] And the stars overhead Shine on her little world She’s the queen of the meadow With her tail curled [Bridge] And in the quiet of the night When the world is fast asleep She curls beside the door With her watch still to keep Her heart beats steady Like the tide on the shore Oh, she asks for nothing But she gives so much more [Chorus] And it's a good life It's a good life For a dog like Berta White as the snow [Hook] Run, Berta, run Through the fields and the sun Run, Berta, run ‘Til the day is done Run, Berta, run Through the fields and the sun Run, Berta, run ‘Til the day is done mmmm the day... the day will come...
