#8 "THE COLLAR" by Half-Meant

V6

She straightens the collar. The doors close. The train moves. By five-fifteen, the desk is clear. The monitor goes dark. She lifts her shoulder bag from the floor. The day is done. Someone from sales leans by the wall: "A few of us are heading down the street." She pauses with her hand upon the strap. Just a moment. "Not tonight," she says. We watch her walk toward the glass doors. Down the concrete steps to the avenue. Everyone has an old story to tell: A stranger at her building late one fall, A dry towel, a cab at dawn. Passing the bakery window pane, She catches her reflection in the glass. Reaches up with one bare hand, Flattens the collar of her shirt. She straightens the collar. The train comes in. By Monday morning, the story changes again. Someone says he came back once. Someone says he was never real. She fills her paper cup by the wall, And walks back to her desk. She taps her card. A dull little tone. Through the gate, Down to the platform. She straightens the collar. The doors close. The train moves. And then she’s gone.
