Another Qingming has come. This piece, Star Court · Qingming, is a labor of love co-created by Seren Mok, Toshifumi Chin, and me. In the version ultimately brought to you, I chose to weave ethereal traditional plucked strings and the distant cry of a flute into the warmth of the electric piano and the faintly intoxicated pulse of a modern kick drum. A restrained sorrow, paired with a fragile, breathing voice, feels so much like standing alone in an old courtyard beneath the fine Qingming rain, murmuring softly to the lonely wisps of blue smoke. “Though the passing years have quietly frosted both temples with pale traces of white, I still remember the way you once called my name.” Dedicated to those beyond the star-strewn shore—those we can never reach, yet still love with all our hearts. And if tonight you, too, are longing for someone, put on your headphones and, in this traceless wind, listen as I tell you the story of half my life. Drizzling rain falls softly into the little courtyard, while the evening wind slips lightly past the long pavilion. A few wisps of blue smoke go searching for old dreams— from whose home do the swallows call out Qingming’s name? I break off a tender branch of fresh green willow, and listen to the wind chime sounding from a distant yard. Life and death are vast and dim, with nowhere to seek answers; memory, like water, slowly freezes into ice. Here in this mortal world, I light a solitary star, to illumine the hidden path of your return. Though yin and yang divide us by ten thousand scenes, I still long to tell you the story of half my life. Outside the window, the rain has just begun to ease again; before my desk, I do not dare to clear away the old things. So many words can never fully be spoken— I can only face my lonely shadow in silence. Though the horizon is far, my longing has not ceased; a long song is sent adrift with the floating duckweed. I only hope we may meet again within a fleeting dream, and wake to find the moonlight clear and empty-bright. Here in this mortal world, I light a solitary star, to illumine the hidden path of your return. Though yin and yang divide us by ten thousand scenes, I still long to tell you the story of half my life. The passing years have quietly frosted both my temples white, yet I still remember the way you once called my name. The fine rain falls and falls into the little courtyard… The wind passes without a trace—you are listening. You are listening…
