Empty Chairs
Coffee cup shakes in my old man hand Morning pills lined up like a marching band Chair by the window lookin' out the glass Countin' the faces that live in my past Doctor says "Walk slow" but that ship sailed Knees sound like gravel on a rusted rail Weather can find every scar I own Storm in my shoulder Thunder in bone I'm the last one at the table Chairs pushed in Outlived my friends Outlived my bride Watched my children grow old and die I'm the last one at the table Talkin' to memories in empty chairs These old hands held a lot of years Folded for answers Spilled many tears Followed my Bible read it page by page Thought I'd learned it all by this ripe old age Heard a knock on the door nearly sent you away Something in your manor let me ask you in that day You circled every promise Wrote dates in the side Park bench conversations Eyes bright and wide Truth in your speech Kingdom on your tongue Promise of the paradise Makin' me feel young [Bridge-positive, with purpose and hope] That water was cold, but my heart burned strong ninety-some years And I still belong Walked down that ladder finally free Jehovah remembered an old soul like me I'm the last one at the table Chairs pushed in No longer alone barely able to cope Jehovah helps me and gives me hope Looking forward to the future with no more strife Watching my children come back to life I'm the first one at the table Waiting to fill those empty chairs
