No one knows her name. No one has ever seen her face. No one asks many questions... and she is quickly forgotten! Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/2ff8ea0b-c1d8-47ee-bd36-e6d5f4d96cfe -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [Chorus] The woman in the alley, has anybody seen her face? Does anybody know her name, or how she came to die in this place? The woman in the alley, no one knows from where she came. No one here remembers her, and no one cares to learn her name. [Verse 1] Morning hangs between the clouds, and Alderwick begins to stir. Shutters open, hammers sound, the market wakes without a word. The gates swing wide, the horses pass, their hooves strike sparks from wet old stone. Sweepers push the night aside as though the streets could clean their own. Breakfast drifts from tavern doors, warm bread, smoke and spiced-up ale. Behind the houses drains run black, and every morning tells its tale. [Chorus] The woman in the alley, has anybody seen her face? Does anybody know her name, or how she came to die in this place? The woman in the alley, no one knows from where she came. No one here remembers her, and no one cares to learn her name. [Verse 2] A woman screams beside the wall. There’s blood between the paving stones. Someone says to fetch the watch, someone else just wants her gone. “Get a cart and move the body. She can’t stay lying here all day.” One more corpse after a restless night, one more problem in the way. The guards arrive from habit more than any hope to understand. They ask a few tired questions, then write what little facts they can. No witness saw the final blow. No neighbor heard enough to care. By noon the blood is washed away, and only rain remains there. [Chorus] The woman in the alley, has anybody seen her face? Does anybody know her name, or how she came to die in this place? The woman in the alley, no one knows from where she came. No one here remembers her, and no one cares to learn her name. [Verse 3] They lift her onto an old cart with others carried there before. No family waits beside the road. No friend comes running through the door. The mortuary knows this work. Another sheet, another bed. A line in ink, a place, a time, a nameless woman, newly dead. Tomorrow someone else will bargain where her body crossed the square. Children will run between the stalls and never know she once lay there. The baker opens before sunrise. The smith will strike his iron again. Alderwick has learned too well how quickly death becomes mundane. [Chorus] The woman in the alley, has anybody seen her face? Does anybody know her name, or how she came to die in this place? The woman in the alley, no one knows from where she came. No one here remembers her, and no one cares to learn her name. [Bridge] No one asks what she was carrying. No one asks where she had been. No one wonders why her clothing still bears mud from roads unseen. No one notices the mark pressed deep into her wounded hand. No one asks what door refused her, or what promise failed to stand. There are too many dead in cities. Too many stories left unread. A name is easy to forget when all you see is one more dead. [Final Chorus] The woman in the alley, has anybody seen her face? Does anybody know her name, or how she came to die in this place? The woman in the alley, they will carry her away. By tomorrow no one living will remember where she lay. They may never learn her story. They may never speak her name. But somewhere underneath the silence, something remembers all the same. something remembers all the same.
