Hearing so many voices through the course of my day - People ringing off the hook, well that’s the price I have to pay - But once I get through the traffic and arrive at my home - The last thing I want to hear is the ringing of a telephone - There’s a woman upstairs who’s begging for a batch of pills - And if she calls down one more time, I’ll reach my limit and have my fill - So it comes down to the ringing and the singing on the other end - And I know there’s a telephone call right around the bend - I find it hard to believe - that there is always a need to reach me! I find it hard to believe - that I’m really as important as they make me out to be! I find it hard to believe - that they’ll have something to say that will turn out good for me! Seeing all the maniacs’ mouths clap unreasonably - I’d rather wire their jaws shut and send them out to sea - But in this new age, well it’s the way you have to be - Always in touch with all the things that breed insecurities - The woman upstairs she used the phone as a guillotine - That telephone destroyed her life in ways we seldom see - And I see myself heading down a similar road - Each day becomes a slow bleed with each ring of the telephone - I find it hard to believe - that there is always a need to reach me! I find it hard to believe - that I’m really as important as they make me out to be! I find it hard to believe - that they’ll have something to say that will turn out good for me!
