[Verse 1] You keep a fig in your coat pocket Soft as a secret, warm as a stone At the bus stop you split it open Purple jam on your thumb alone [Pre-Chorus] You say, “Don’t ask what I’m after” Then grin with your mouth held wide A tiny crown of seeds on your collar And a garden tucked inside [Chorus] Figeater, figeater, sweet-toothed thief You nibble the noon from the edge of the leaf Figeater, figeater, tell me the trick How do you swallow a summer so quick? [Verse 2] You trade the bruised ones for buttons Leave the best one under my chair I find the stem in the sugar bowl And your fingerprints everywhere [Pre-Chorus] You say, “The fruit chose the moment” Like that settles every case Then wipe a little violet laughter From the corners of your face [Chorus] Figeater, figeater, sweet-toothed thief You nibble the noon from the edge of the leaf Figeater, figeater, tell me the trick How do you swallow a summer so quick? [Bridge] When winter comes, will you eat the calendar? Will you save one seed in a matchbox tin? I’ll keep the bowl beside the window You can come back when the figs come in [Final Chorus] Figeater, figeater, sweet-toothed thief You nibble the noon from the edge of the leaf Figeater, figeater, leave me a bit I’ve got a taste for the trouble of it [Outro] One for the road, one for the ride One little purple moon inside
