FRANK 013 – The Trial of Justine | Frankenstein
(Verse 1) They brought young Justine trembling to the judgement hall, While grief for murdered William darkened over all. The household knew her kindness, innocence and grace, Yet cruel suspicion gathered round her frightened face. (Verse 2) The fatal locket taken from the child was found, Concealed among her clothing as the charge was bound. She swore she knew no reason how the thing came there, But every word of innocence dissolved into despair. (Chorus) They weighed the false evidence and gave the innocent blame, While Victor held the secret that could clear her name. He watched the law condemn her and scarcely drew a breath, For fear had sealed his silence as they sentenced her to death. (Verse 3) A priest demanded penance while she tried to plead, And threatened her salvation till she bent beneath his need. At last she spoke confession, though every claim was wrong, Then mourned that fear had forced her to betray the truth so long. (Verse 4) Elizabeth stood beside her through anguish and through pain, And swore that she believed her, though pleading proved in vain. But Victor knew the murderer and still restrained his tongue, While justice crushed the blameless life of one so kind and young. (Chorus) They weighed the false evidence and gave the innocent blame, While Victor held the secret that could clear her name. He watched the law condemn her and scarcely drew a breath, For fear had sealed his silence as they sentenced her to death. (Bridge) He knew what hand had planted what the judges thought was true, He knew his own creation and the evil it could do. Yet terror made him silent, and silence turned to shame, As Justine bore the punishment that should have marked his name. (Outro) The morning bells were sounding when they led her from the cell, While Victor heard within them his own accusing knell. Another life lay broken by the secret that he gave, And silence walked beside her on the pathway to the grave.
