Visiting Darkness Without Moving In - A2

If you read the things I write You might wonder where I’ve been, What dark little room I’m in, What ghosts are living underneath my skin. You might hear a voice that sounds like me, Talking about the things that hurt, And wonder if the words I’m writing Are the truth beneath the dirt. But there’s something you should know Before you read too far: The things I write are not the things I am. They’re pieces of a puzzle, They’re shadows on a wall, They’re moments borrowed from a thousand lives, And sometimes none of me at all. I can write about the lonely Without being lonely. I can write about the lost Without being lost. I can crawl inside a broken heart Just to find out what it costs. I can write about the darkness Because darkness leaves a mark. It has a way of shouting louder Than the quiet of the light. And maybe that’s the strangest thing About the way my mind can be: I live in the sunlight, But the shadows fascinate me. I don’t write about happy people Because I understand them fine. I know the language of a smile, I’ve lived there most of my life. But give me someone standing At the edge of who they are, Someone searching for a missing piece, Someone staring at the stars— That’s where my curiosity wakes. That’s where the questions start. Not because I want their darkness. Because I want to understand their heart. So if you hear me write About someone falling apart, Please don’t go searching through the lyrics For a secret map to my heart. A moment isn’t a lifetime. A character isn’t me. A wound isn’t an identity. A thought isn’t destiny. And a song is just a doorway I can open for a while. I walk into the darkness, Look around, And write down what I find. Then I come back home. To you. Because here’s the funny thing About darkness in a song: It sticks. It grabs you by the collar. It hangs around too long. It echoes through the room After the music has moved on. Happiness can feel like sunlight— Warm, beautiful, everywhere— But pain has sharper edges, And sharper things get noticed. Maybe that’s why people listen When somebody sings about surviving. Not because they love the pain. Because somewhere inside the pain They’re looking for a way out. So sometimes I write about the broken To remind the broken they can mend. I write about the lost Because I like watching people find their way. I write about the lonely Because I believe somebody Should tell them they aren’t alone. And sometimes I write about myself. But even then, It’s only one little window Into one little room Inside one enormous house. Don’t mistake the window for the house. Don’t mistake the storm For the sky. And please don’t mistake The things I write For the man you know. Because if you really want to know me, Don’t read my darkest song. Watch who I am When the music stops. Watch who I am When you walk through the door. Watch what I do When somebody needs a hand. Watch me laugh. Watch me love. Watch me wake up beside you. That’s where I live. That’s where you’ll find me. I am not the darkness I sometimes write about. I am the person who turns the darkness into words and then comes back to the light. I am sunlight. I am laughter. I am the guy who can spend an afternoon thinking about somebody else’s broken heart and then go home perfectly happy. And maybe that’s the strange little paradox of the person you married: I don’t have to suffer to write about suffering. I don’t have to be lost to write about being lost. I don’t have to be broken to wonder how broken people heal. I can visit the darkness without moving in. I can understand the shadow without becoming the shadow. So when I hand you one of these songs, Please don’t be afraid of the person you think you’re hearing. Listen a little deeper. The darkness is what I’m writing about. You are where I’m coming back to. The song may be dark. The words may hurt. The characters may fall apart. But when the last note disappears, I’m still here. And I’m still me. And I’m still yours.
