The Magic of the Tree Line
[Verse 1] Every Marine knew the warning, Every Devil knew the sign, Some mistakes got paperwork— Some got handled at the tree line. Marines went walking in with problems, Came back knowing wrong from right, Busted lips and dirty cammies, Maybe sporting one black eye. Nobody asked what happened there— WE ALL FUCKING KNEW WHY. Then one day I learned my number Had apparently come in. So I headed for the tree line— TO REPENT OF ALL MY SINS. [Verse 2] But the second I crossed over, Something changed before my eyes, Mud gave way to fields of clover, Golden sunlight filled the sky. Cold beer waited in a cooler. Hot chow covered every plate. Dry socks hung from every branch— AND LIBERTY WAS NEVER LATE. Perfect weather, shade and silence, Not a working party sign. I'd been lied to my whole enlistment— THERE WAS HEAVEN AT THE TREE LINE. [Chorus] TAKE ME TO THE TREE LINE! WHERE THE BEER IS ALWAYS COLD! WHERE THE CHOW IS HOT AND PLENTIFUL AND NOBODY DOES WHAT THEY'RE TOLD! No duty! No formations! No one wasting fucking time! If this is where bad Marines get sent— I'LL FUCK UP ALL THE FUCKING TIME! Take me! Leave me! I'M DOING FUCKING FINE! THERE'S A MARINE CORE PARADISE WAITING AT THE TREE LINE! [Verse 3] First Sarge saw my hands in pockets, Never even broke his stride. Gunny saw I needed shaving— AND THE BASTARD LET IT SLIDE. Transportation came in early. Every weapon checked in fine. Nobody needed volunteers. THE ARMORY CLOSED ON FUCKING TIME. Then a butterbar grabbed a compass, Led us straight there first damn try. That's when I knew beyond all doubt— I'D FUCKING DIED AND THIS WAS PARADISE. [Bridge] All those years we'd misunderstood it. All those bruises, all those grins. Those Marines weren't getting corrected— THE LUCKY FUCKS WERE GETTING IN. They'd found the fucking promised land And kept it from us all this time. THE GREEDY BASTARDS NEVER TOLD US 'BOUT THE MAGIC OF THE TREE LINE. [Verse 4] Then the sunlight started flickering. Paradise began to shake. Golden fields gave way to darkness. Something dragged me back awake. Opened up my one good eye, Felt the blood across my face. Tasted copper on my tongue— AND HEAVEN VANISHED WITHOUT TRACE. No cold beer. No hot chow. No paradise divine. Just dirt beneath my fucking back... AND THREE MARINES AT THE TREE LINE. [Final Chorus] DON'T TAKE ME TO THE TREE LINE! NOW I FUCKING UNDERSTAND! THERE AIN'T BEER BEYOND THOSE BRANCHES! THERE AIN'T SOME ENCHANTED LAND! No hot chow! No early liberty! No fucking paradise! AND THAT BUTTERBAR STILL CAN'T LAND-NAV TO SAVE HIS FUCKING LIFE! All those Devils coming back With busted lips were doing time— TURNS OUT I SAW FUCKING HEAVEN WHEN THEY KNOCKED ME OUT AT THE TREE LINE! [Outro] Maybe it was just a dream. Maybe paradise ain't real. But there's one thing from that concussion I can somehow still fucking feel. Of everything I saw in heaven, One thing stays stuck in my mind— THAT BEER WAS REALLY FUCKING COLD... At the tree line.
