Desert Stars and Moai

[Intro] Chile, a country long and thin I spent about a month along the way Heading south, riding bus after bus Crossing the land from north to south Starting out in the Atacama Antofagasta, Copiapó La Serena, Valparaíso Santiago, Easter Island [Verse 1] First came Atacama, the desert town Dry winds beneath a crystal sky A starry night they call the world’s best And Moon Valley, like the moon had fallen nearby José Luis from the tour company A genuinely kind and friendly guide With only sand and sky surrounding us Still, my heart felt full inside [Chorus] Under the desert night, I dreamed Bathed in light from distant galaxies Breathing softly beneath the stars Feeling small in the endless mystery When there’s nothing, you begin to see This is where Chile’s story starts From this place, we leave the desert Running toward the next new town [Verse 2] Antofagasta, a city by the sea Watching wild sea lions drift and play At the mercado, pulpo empanadas Left the ocean’s flavor on my lips that day Fruit was cheap, so for dinner We let fruit alone carry us through The scent of salt along the harbor Not so bad—this journey felt true [Verse 3] In Copiapó, there wasn’t much to do So we watched a movie and took it slow Mountains gathered around the town While quiet hours came and went below From La Serena to Damas Island It was off-season, few penguins in sight Still, along the bus route there and back We saw wild creatures left and right [Verse 4] Valparaíso, a city made of art Colors dancing on the hillside walls Walking through its streets of every color Racing down the slope toward the sea below The same city, but never quite the same Every corner painted in a different shade The hostel owner was a friendly guy Listening to the stories that we made A smile exchanged in an unknown town Can make the darkest evening bright Whenever the harbor wind came singing Those colors stayed within my sight [Verse 5] Then we reached Santiago, the capital Far more of a city than I had dreamed We bought fresh vegetables at the mercado And lived like locals for a little while Some streets felt a little unsafe So we walked with care and kept our eyes wide After months without a bowl of ramen That first taste warmed me deep inside City lights across the evening streets A traveler’s shadow stretching long There’s a quiet loneliness in convenience And that too became a page of Chile’s song [Bridge] Southward, southward The buses kept on rolling Past the desert, sea and city lights Toward an island still unknown [Verse 6] At last, we flew to Easter Island Easter Island, a brand-new start Across the ocean, Rapa Nui Chasing mysteries from the ancient past Iorana, hello Maururu, thank you A mysterious island where a guide is essential Seeing the living moai was incredible Giant stone faces standing on the land Watching over ages gone by The deeper the mystery grew around them The more we wondered who had placed them there and why We ate so much wild guava Nature there was something else In the quiet off-season ocean Empty paths moved at a slower pace Birds were flying past the waves And even time began to drift [Chorus] Easter Island, far beyond the sea Moai shadows standing in the night Iorana, Maururu Ancient winds were striking deep inside The deeper the mystery, the more we want to know Breathing freely in the open land Left behind on this distant island A story we may never understand [Final Chorus] Atacama stars above the desert night Antofagasta, ocean wind Copiapó, La Serena Valparaíso, streets of color Santiago beneath the city lights Easter Island, ancient voices calling A long journey down the length of Chile Every moment now a treasure Goodbye, Chile, though it hurts to leave We’ll keep moving toward the next unknown Outside the window, new horizons Another story waits beyond [Outro] From the edge of the stars to the ocean wide We’ll set out on the road again Iorana, until we meet again Carrying Chile’s wind within our hearts
