# TRACK 3 — I WASN'T THERE [Verse 1 — deep male baritone; sparse acoustic guitar, restrained delivery] First recital, second row, Her mother saved a seat, I know. I took a shift I could've turned down, Came home after she'd gone to bed. Sixteen candles, Friday night, I called next morning, blamed the time. She said, "It's fine, Dad. Don't feel bad." She'd gotten good at saying that. I paid the bills, I kept us fed, Put decent clothes upon her back. Thought providing proved I cared— It's easier than being there. [Chorus — clean vocal; simple, wounded melody] I wasn't there when she looked for me, Wasn't there when she learned not to. Every "next time," every "wait and see" Became another thing I didn't do. I thought a father got forever, Thought blood meant she'd always care. She didn't lose me all at once— I just wasn't there. [Verse 2 — longer, increasingly rhythmic; acoustic body percussion enters] At thirteen, she quit telling me Which girls were cruel, which boys were mean. At fifteen, Ray taught her to drive; I said I'd do it, never found the time. At seventeen, she wrecked her car, I didn't answer at the bar. Her mother drove through pouring rain; I heard about it the next day. At nineteen, boxes filled the hall. I carried two, she carried all. She hugged me underneath the stairs— Already used to me not being there. [Instrumental — jagged acoustic-guitar pattern; bass enters against the pulse] [Verse 3 — only six lines; melody unexpectedly soft] She called one Sunday late in May, Said, "Dad, we finally picked the date." I wrote September twenty-third, Then waited for the other words. "Do you need money? Anything?" She said, "No, Dad. We've handled it." [Bridge — music gradually strips down] Wedding morning, borrowed tie, I practiced speeches on the drive. "You look beautiful." "I'm proud." All the things I'd left too late came out. Outside her room I heard her say, "Uncle Ray, you ready today?" He answered, "Since you asked me, kid." And something in me understood Exactly what I'd done to us. [Breakdown — heavy acoustic-djent groove; vocal rough but controlled] I could've walked inside that room, Demanded what I thought was due. Could've blamed her mom, blamed Uncle Ray, Blamed everybody in my way. But he was there when tires went flat. He taught her how to swing a bat. He heard the names of boys she'd kissed. I had the title. He had the years. [Instrumental Stop] He'd earned this. [Final Chorus — broader melody; altered lyrics] I wasn't there when she looked for me, So someone stood where I withdrew. Every "next time," every "wait and see" Left one more thing for him to do. I thought a father got forever, Thought blood meant I'd always belong. But love can live and still get smaller When somebody stays gone too long. [Final Verse — chorus does not return; bare guitar] The chapel doors swung open wide. She held his arm and stepped inside. Her mother cried, the whole room stared. I stood because the bride was there. She passed my row and caught my eye. She smiled at me while walking by. No anger left for us to share— Just twenty years I wasn't there. [Outro — instrumental only; unresolved acoustic figure]
