Alan, Alice, Prancer and Me [Spoken Intro] Alan found Prancer abandoned in front of a feed store in Kathleen. Born with his back legs fused together. Most people saw a dog that couldn’t walk. Alan saw a dog worth saving. [Verse 1] Alan found him by the feed store, Black Blue Heeler, scared and small, Back legs fused together, Couldn’t hardly move at all. There was a vet right there beside it, So Alan carried Prancer in, Said, “Do whatever you can do— Just give this dog a chance to win.” They separated both his back legs, And the healing came on slow, But before too long that stubborn dog Was learning how to go. From abandoned on the roadside To running wild and free, That was Prancer, Alan, Alice, And the start of history. [Chorus] Alan, Alice, Prancer and me, Captain and Coke for Alice, PBR for Alan and me. Fishing through the chain of lakes, Then partying till three, With the chiminea burning In the back screened room so free. Bonfires behind the house, Golden Tee and company— Those were damn good nights For Alan, Alice, Prancer and me. [Verse 2] Alan had a fishing boat, And we’d run the chain of lakes, Cooler packed with PBR, Lines tied down and drags set straight. Prancer watched the shoreline, Every bird and wake and sound, Like those lakes belonged to him And he was there to guard the ground. Alice brought the Captain, Poured the Coke and held her own, Alan swore the fish were biting Every place we hadn’t gone. We might not fill the cooler, But nobody gave a damn, We caught enough good stories To keep laughing where we landed. [Verse 3] Alice had a badass GTO That growled before it moved, All muscle, chrome, and attitude, And nothing left to prove. We’d wind up down at Boondocks, Or drinking at Ever Par, Then roll back laughing through the night Inside that rumbling car. Back at Alan and Alice’s, The screen room came alive, Chiminea throwing shadows, Bonfire sparks against the sky. Mushrooms bending every corner, Golden Tee still keeping score, And Prancer stretched out watching Like he’d seen this all before. [Bridge] He began with fused-up back legs, Left outside and thrown away, Then he ran beside the bonfires Like he’d always moved that way. Alan gave him one good chance, And that dog took everything— Every yard and boat and firelight, Every night worth remembering. [Verse 4] Some nights got loud and foolish, Some mornings came too soon, Some stories lost their details Under smoke and Florida moon. But I still see that GTO, Still hear those screen-room songs, Still see Alice with her Captain, Alan passing PBRs along. And Prancer moving easy On the legs they thought were done, Black coat shining by the fire While the rest of us had fun. Time can blur a lot of faces, But it cannot fully steal The people, dogs, and reckless nights That made those years feel real. [Final Chorus] Alan, Alice, Prancer and me, Captain and Coke for Alice, PBR for Alan and me. Fishing through the chain of lakes, Then partying till three, With the chiminea burning In the back screened room so free. Bonfires behind the house, Golden Tee and company— Those were damn good nights For Alan, Alice, Prancer and me. Alan, Alice, Prancer and me, Still moving through my memory Like that old GTO ran free. The fire still glows, the screen room shines, The lake wind moves the trees, And Prancer runs on four good legs Exactly where he ought to be. [Outro] He was left beside a feed store. Alan gave him a chance. The vet gave him four good legs. And Prancer gave us one hell of a story.
