Vega, where I now stand, lies beside the great river of stars. One of its old names was النسر الواقع — al-Nasr al-Wāqiʿ: the eagle descending. What a beautiful name. And now, this is where I stand. Across the great river shines Altair. Far beyond it, at an almost unimaginable distance, is Deneb. The swan, the eagle, the bridge of magpies— all were stories woven between the stars by people who once looked up at them from Earth. From here, the Sun is only about as bright as a fourth-magnitude star. Earth itself cannot be seen. And yet, the stars that people on Earth once gazed upon from so far away are now this close to me. I draw a chart of the stars. And in its margins, I try placing a story that does not yet have a name. [Verse 1] Beside the river of stars, the star of the descending eagle. Across the farther shore, Altair shines white. In the distant sky, the swan keeps watch. I follow once again the stars someone once joined together. [Bridge] It does not have to be only once a year. Stars that once seemed far apart share the same sky here. So perhaps between them I will lay down a story of my own.
