[V1] Forty-six years old and I'm out for the check From Laredo to Fort Worth, leaving the city limits behind. I'm an Assembler, my hands are cramped and full of grease Just trying to find a little bit of God-given peace. The truck gave up, died right before getting home So I'm stuck on this bus, taking a different kind of ride. Sitting in this seat, just staring at the Texas sky Thinking about the hours and the days that keep passing by. [C] I’m forty six years old working hard for my ladies thinking of them while heading back home to San Antonio After my truck broke down at a truck stop, nowhere left to go. Watching the pouring rain hitting the window pane Just another day of the struggle and the strain. I’m fifty-five miles from San Antonio My Ladies, I hate doing this job, but I got to do what I got to do for you. The engine's blown, and I’m tired of the road But I'm coming home soon to see you all, my Ladies. [V2] I’ve been through Austin and every town in between The longest miles and the hardest days I've ever seen. Being an Assembler means the work is never really done Under the factory lights or out in the Texas sun. I hate being away, I hate this job and the distance too But I do it all for my Ladies everything I do is for you. It’s been a long week and the truck breaking was the final straw Now I’m just waiting for that skyline that I haven't yet saw. [B] (Slow, heavy guitar rhythm) It’s not a fancy life, and it sure as hell ain't easy The food at these stops always makes me feel greasy. But I keep my head up and I keep my hands steady I'm just wanting to get home, I'm more than ready. [V3] I'm looking at my watch, counting down every single mile Just waiting to get back so I can see my Ladies smile. No more assembly lines for at least a couple of days I’m done with the highway and the lonely, hazy maze. The bus is pulling out, heading south on the 35 Just grateful to be headed home and feeling alive. I'll be there soon, even if the truck stayed behind I'm leaving all the stress and the labor out of my mind. [Outro] Fifty-five miles... San Antonio, I see you. Woman, I'm coming home. I hate the job, but I love my Ladies. I'll get there as soon as I can. [©2026 By Matthew E Treviño]
