Whenever I heard the key turn in the lock, I knew I had made it through another day. “Put up with it. They’re your family.” “Love them. They’re your family.” But I was never good enough to love people just because we shared the same blood. Whenever someone was kind to me, I started preparing myself to be betrayed. Whenever someone smiled at me, I wondered what they were going to take from me next. That was my normal. “Hope you find happiness someday.” I hate those words. I’ve never seen happiness before. So how am I supposed to know where to find something I’ve never even seen? If you hate me, then hate me. Just don’t try to make me normal. I didn’t break. This was the only way I knew how to survive. I don’t know what love is. But I know how to hate. Don’t look inside me. There’s something in there far uglier than you could ever imagine. “I raised you.” Sounds nice when you put it that way. But all you really did was leave me there just alive enough to survive. I used to hear laughter coming from other people’s homes and think that was happiness. A birthday cake never made me as happy as the nights when the screaming finally stopped. That’s why a quiet room scares me. The quieter the night, the more I feel like something is about to happen. When someone holds me, my body tries to run before I can think. When someone asks, “Are you okay?” I want to hide the fact that I’m not. I hate the word “poor thing.” Don’t pretend you’re saving me just so you can turn my past into a story about yourself. If you hate me, then hate me. Just don’t try to make me normal again. Kindness feels like a debt paid in advance. I know you’ll come back later to collect. I’m not asking you to love me. I’m not asking you to save me. You can leave without knowing where I came from. Maybe that’s better for you too. If I had grown up in a normal family, would I have been a kinder girl? If there had been even one person who stood on my side, maybe I never would have learned to distrust everyone. But what good is it now to dig those “what ifs” out of the grave? I’m not a demon. I wasn’t raised by demons. It was much simpler than that. I wasn’t loved where I was supposed to be loved. That’s all. That’s all it took to turn a human being into something like me. If you hate me, then hate me. Just don’t look at me like I’m something to pity. A child who never learned how to cry doesn’t suddenly learn when she grows up. I don’t know what love is. But I know what it feels like to lose. So I never let anyone touch the heart I had to protect. I put on beautiful clothes. I paint my lips red. And I smile like I always do. Because at least my smile is something no one can take away from me. “Hope you find happiness someday.” Now I know what to say. I never wanted happiness. All I ever wanted was somewhere I could come home to without being afraid I might not survive the night.
