A lonely man, sure he has found the perfect girlfriend, tells his skeptical friend about his first date, full of double meanings and misunderstandings: every line she writes sounds like a love promise to him. Only at dinner does he notice the truth: she is Annabelle, the possessed doll from The Conjuring films. Torn between running for the door and falling for her cracked smile, spinning head and sinister laugh, he chooses to stay, and the night ends in a decidedly hellish way. The song is loosely inspired by "...And Then I Noticed That She Was a Gargoyle" by Nanowar of Steel, borrowing its spirit and storytelling structure with entirely original words and characters, and is meant as a heartfelt tribute to the band and its unique blend of metal, humor and storytelling. [Intro | tavern ambience | glasses clinking | low chatter | fiddle and acoustic guitar, tipsy folk feel | door creaks open] [Spoken | male | shaken, hair a mess, slightly slurred] Sit down, buddy. I'm buying. Don't mind the bag. I came straight from her place. [Spoken | second male voice | deadpan, bored] Her? Who's "her"? [Spoken | first male voice | dreamy] She's Annie. [Verse 1 | male tenor | self-pitying, tipsy storytelling | fiddle and acoustic guitar] Scrolling pages, three a.m., a beer in my hand, Sad old songs on repeat, no one to understand. Then I found a lady: "Vintage. Sixty years." White lace dress, red curls, a face with no tears. Her ad said, "Sold as seen. One careful owner." Sixty years of wisdom — and me, a hopeless loner. [Verse 2 | rising | electric guitar enters | pub drums | tubular bell hit] She wrote, "Never used" — I figured: pure, untouched, a virgin bride! She wrote, "Do not open" — I thought: take it slow, let the man guide. She wrote, "I've spent decades behind glass, with strangers staring at me" — I figured: experienced, a performer, a woman who's free! She wrote, "I move when no one's looking" — oh what a shy girl! She wrote, "I want your soul" — real commitment, in this cold world! [Verse 3 | male tenor | smitten, wide-eyed | music-box melody] So I took her out to dinner in her gown of lace, Porcelain perfection, not a hair out of place. She never touched her wine, she never said a word — Best listener ever, the loudest silence I've heard. The candle leaned toward her, my glass cracked in two — I called it chemistry. Then I read the sign. Who knew? [Chorus | power metal ballad | soaring tenor | choir | double-kick] And then I noticed that, she was a doll! Her eyes roll back, and down I fall! And then I noticed that she was Annabelle — A demon in a wedding dress, a bride sent up from hell! [Backing vocals | deadpan male choir | skeptical] (You read the sign and still, went home with her? Huh?) (But what do you mean by "a doll"? Is she sweet or is she cold?) [Verse 4 | male tenor | defensive, indignant] No!! I mean the doll! The freakin cracked-porcelain one from the case! The thing from The Conjuring films — just google her face! And instead of a heartbeat, a hollow, cold and still — But those curls, my friend, those curls, they give me such a thrill! [Backing vocals | deadpan male choir | third-person echo] And then he noticed that she was a doll! Her eyes roll back, and down he'd fall! And then he noticed that she was Annabelle! He thought "do not open" was just good manners, well… [Spoken | second male voice | deadpan] Dude, c'mon... she's a fu**'n doll! [Verse 5 | male tenor | defensive, tender, escalating | guitars swell] I know, I know, but you haven't seen that smile — Frozen and perfect, with a crack that runs a mile. And when she turns her head, and keeps on turning round, Man, the flexibility! I swear I hit the ground. Her laugh at three a.m., so sweet, so low, so sly — That sinister giggle sends a shiver down my — spine, I mean. Oh my. She rocks that chair all night, she's got rhythm, that's for sure, She never nags, never argues, never leaves me — never more. [Bridge | slower | choir hums | church-organ swell | music box] Driving home that night with her belted in beside me, Her cracked cheek in the window glass — she smiled, and then she eyed me. ....mmmmh.... [Verse 6 | male tenor | breathless, proud | guitars build | candle flicker | bed creaking | music box accelerating] Back at my place, I lit the candles, set the scene, The rocking chair was rocking — a patient girl, I mean. Then the bed began to shake, then the ceiling, then the floor, I'd never heard a woman scream in Latin before! She floated off the mattress, I swear it's what I saw, Sixty years untouched — and she made up for it, and more! She was so wild, so wild, I thought the devil had possessed her… [Spoken | sinister demonic voice | deadpan] …You’re damn Right. [Final Chorus | full band | choir | double-kick | tubular bells] And then I noticed that, she was a doll! Her eyes roll back, and down I fall! And then I noticed that she was Annabelle — A demon in a wedding dress, a bride sent up from hell! [Final Chorus | key lift | full choir | double-kick | tubular bells] And then I noticed that I love a doll! Her eyes roll back, and I stand tall! And then I noticed that I love Annabelle — A demon in a wedding dress, and I'm the groom, oh well! [Outro | tavern ambience | glass shatters | sinister porcelain giggle | music box slows down] [Spoken | first male voice | dreamy] Barman! Two beers… and one holy water for the lady. [Spoken | second male voice | deadpan] Hey… Her head just turned? [Spoken | first male voice | dreamy] Yeah... Isn't she gorgeous? [Music box winds down, giggle, silence] [End]
