THE MIRROR NEVER CLAPPED(Revisit)

V6

[Intro — applause fades into train noise; no drums] They gave me flowers. Asked me to hold them higher for the picture. I did. When I got home… I couldn’t find a vase. [Verse 1 — dry close-mic, Rhodes and upright bass] Fourteen camera flashes, heat against my face Someone fixed my collar, said, “Remember to breathe” I walked into the lights with my name across the screen Every hand was genuine; I wasn’t doubting them I just couldn’t find the man they were congratulating Said thank you with a smile I’d been practicing for ages Made a speech about the long road, doors that wouldn’t move Then I smiled for one more picture like a man with nothing to prove Old friend held me by the shoulder; I could see his eyes were wet Said, “You’ve come a long way.” I said, “Yeah,” and swallowed the rest On the train, bouquet on my knees, cellophane against my coat My reflection kept arriving in the dark between the stops Home. Keys in the dish. Shoes beside the door. The little plaque leaned sideways where the mail had been before Phone kept lighting up; I turned it face-down on the chair For the first time all that evening, nobody needed me there [Hook — sparse, hummed harmony; drums breathe] The mirror never clapped Didn’t call me brave Didn’t tell me I was broken Didn’t ask me to explain Just a man still in his jacket With some flowers he couldn’t place The mirror never clapped And I stayed [Verse 2 — tighter drums; muted trumpet answers] I knew where to stand for pictures, how to meet the camera’s eye Fixed my collar in the mirror with nobody standing by Caught myself and laughed; the sound came back too thin I’d been home for twenty minutes, still performing for the sink Brother texted, “Proud of you. Call when you get free.” Couldn’t make a sentence that felt like it came from me Not because I didn’t love him; that was never in dispute Just afraid he’d ask how I was and I’d have to tell the truth Took the notebook from my bag, wrote, “I am not the applause” Read it back. It sounded clever. Didn’t sound like how I was Crossed it out. Wrote, “I’m grateful.” Then beneath it, “I’m tired.” Left them side by side in ink, with no one there to admire At the sink, the flowers leaned against a chipped blue cup And the faucet had been dripping; still I hadn’t turned it shut I just watched two sentences dry, no grand thought to defend For once I didn’t need to make a quote of how it felt [Hook — same melody, softer delivery] The mirror never clapped Didn’t call me brave Didn’t tell me I was broken Didn’t ask me to explain Just a man still in his jacket With some flowers he couldn’t place The mirror never clapped And I stayed [Bridge — drums out; room tone, one cello note] I am grateful. [Silence] I’m tired. Both were true. Only one made it into the speech. [Verse 3 — drums return with warmer organ] Called my mother after midnight; thought she’d let it go to sleep She said, “I saw you on the stage.” I said, “You saw the polished me.” She asked me, “Are you happy?” I said, “Proud. But I don’t know.” She didn’t race to fill the quiet. Let the question have its room Put the phone against a dish while I dug beneath the sink Found a jar with the label half torn off around the rim Cut the plastic from the stems, shook the paper from the leaves Set them down in kitchen water, gave the flowers room to breathe Didn’t throw away the plaque; didn’t put it on display Put it near the family picture, where it had some room to stay Called my brother in the morning, didn’t wait to sound complete Said, “Thank you for the message. You still wanna come eat?” No big change of character. No lightning in the glass. Same old coat across the chair. Same award beside the lamp. Next day I walked past the mirror on my way to make some tea Didn’t stop to check the face that everyone had come to see [Final Hook — soft low choir hum, trumpet falls silent] The mirror never clapped Didn’t call me brave Didn’t tell me I was broken Didn’t ask me to explain Just a man without his jacket With the flowers in their place The mirror never clapped And I stayed [Outro — drums and bass stop; single Rhodes chord] The flowers lasted six days. I remember that. I didn’t count the applause.
