I knew it needed to feel complete, even within the time limit, so laying out the acts was key. I wanted to pay homage to the progressive metal I've always enjoyed, with a bit of an Eme-tal twist. This song is about imposter syndrome, something which I think many of us can relate to, and of which I've had varied conversations about. It breaks down into 4 main sections, and it's meant to be an experience. Enjoy! --------------------------- LYRICS AND STORY: --------------------------- ACT 1: A Question of Identity The solo in this section functions as unease and introspection. It should feel unstable. [Intro] [Verse 1] If belief is the abyss… let me step into the light; I am tired of being someone that is chasing to be right [Buildup] I'm drowning, I'm drowning In a sea of my own doubt [Pre-Chorus] I’m a house of cards built on shaky ground At any moment I could be knocked down ACT 2: Fighting Demons The solo here builds on that internal struggle. The fluttering piano is meant to feel like a chase. [Chorus] I'm I'm I'm Impostor syndrome-- It's a cage inside my head I wear this crown of doubt, like a tombstone for the dead; Impostor syndrome Just a body in disguise, Inside looking out, Fighting demons made of lies ACT 3: Fragmentation of the Self Imposter syndrome can be an internal prison, reinforced by doubt and self-surveillance. [Verse 2] Insecurity tends to linger like an old squeaky floor— every step I take forward might land wrong just like before [Verse 3] Every me is a new version that I never quite became— half-assembled expectations, tell me now, what's my name? [Chorus] I'm I'm I'm Impostor syndrome-- It's a cage inside my head I wear this crown of doubt, like a tombstone for the dead; Impostor syndrome Just a body in disguise, Inside looking out, Fighting demons made of lies… ACT 4: Acceptance without Resolution This is the philosophical center. The conflict isn’t solved, but it’s understood. The metaphor of a “mountain made of an ant hill” reveals how self-imposed the struggle may be—yet still powerful. [Bridge] Being real should be simpler than the role I try to fill I’m a mountain made of an ant hill [Outro] I’m I’m I'm Impostor syndrome (I'm I'm I'm) I'm drowning, now I'm drowning In a sea of my own doubt... I'm lost (I'm lost) (I'm I'm I'm) Impostor syndrome Trapped in a world with my own ghost... I'm I'm I'm Impostor syndrome... (I'm I'm Impostor syndrome) ------------------------------------------------------
