[Verse 1] You came in slow Like heat through the floor A hand on my neck A key in the door I let it in Like it knew my name Warm at the start Then it slowly changed [Pre-Chorus] And I felt the climb In the back of my throat Soft on the breath Then it turned to smoke I should’ve known When the hush got thin Something that shines Can still cave you in [Chorus] A love like ashes A love like ashes Held me close Then turned it's back A love like ashes A love like ashes First it warms you Then it burns you black [Verse 2] Your words were soft Like embers in the dark Glowing at first Then they scorched my heart I kept one more day For the turning point But the crack in the show Was the first warning voice [Pre-Chorus] And I felt the climb In the back of my throat Soft on the breath Then it turned to smoke I should’ve known When the hush got thin Something that shines Can still cave you in [Chorus] A love like ashes A love like ashes Held me close Then turned it's back A love like ashes A love like ashes First it warms you Then it burns you black [Bridge] No holy fire No clean goodbye Just a slow dark glow In the corner of my mind I still feel you On a split-lip grin What looked like home Was a kiln within [Chorus] A love like ashes A love like ashes Held me close Then turned it's back A love like ashes A love like ashes First it warms you Then it burns you black [Outro] A love like ashes Yeah, it stings like that A love like ashes And I wear the black
