The Rhythm of Love and Strife

The Rhythm of Love and Strife Take a slow breath in. And a longer breath out. Long ago, in ancient Sicily, there lived a philosopher named em-PED-uh-kleez (Empedocles). He lived during political unrest. Cities divided. Factions fighting. Trust breaking. He looked at the chaos around him and asked, Why does everything fall apart? He studied nature — fire, wind, stone, sea. And he noticed something simple. Nothing is destroyed. It only mixes and separates. He said everything is made of four roots: Earth. Air. Fire. Water. And two great forces move them. He called them Love and Strife. Love gathers. Strife separates. Not good and evil. Not right and wrong. Just rhythm. When Love is strong, things come together. When Strife rises, things pull apart. The universe breathes this way. And so do we. Take a slow breath in. Feel your body as Earth — steady and supported. Feel your breath as Air — entering and leaving. Feel warmth in your chest — Fire. Feel the quiet flow within you — Water. These elements are not fighting. They are mixing. Now gently notice: Where in your life does something feel separated? Fragmented? Tense? No fixing. Just awareness. This is Strife — separating. It is not failure. It is a phase in the turning. Now bring your attention to one small place inside you that feels steady. A memory. A person. A practice. A quiet strength. This is Love — gathering. Love does not force. It does not shout. It slowly re-mixes what has scattered. Feel that gathering now. Even if it is subtle. Even if it is small. em-PED-uh-kleez (Empedocles) believed the entire universe moves in cycles: Unity. Separation. Chaos. Return. You are not outside this rhythm. Your grief. Your changing body. Your family tensions. Your questions about the world. Not broken. Rearranging. Nothing is annihilated. Only mixed and separated. Take one more slow breath. Feel Earth holding you. Air moving through you. Fire warming you. Water flowing within you. Feel separation and gathering coexisting. This is coherence. The cycle turns. And you are part of it. Slow breath in. Long breath out. Rest here.
