Shadows of Freedom

August 20, 2024 at 1:40 PMv3.5

Verse 1: The bonds of men were broken, yet wealth shifted hands. Freedom promised but constrained by debts unyielding. Compensation, they called it, but what is gold to a stolen life? Wealth preserved, while the shackles only changed form. A promise of tomorrow paid with yesterday's wages. Verse 2: The land remembers, the captives walked its soil, Their hands tilled the earth, their sweat paid in blood. Now, the land is sold for gold, And those once chained reap their fields in silence. The soil bears witness, yet the chains are buried deep. Verse 3: In the courts, they speak of profit, Of the value of men as mere numbers on a page. Yet in the streets, mothers search for sons lost to labor, Their cries unheard in the halls where wealth is counted. What price for freedom, when the heart remains in chains? Verse 4: The tides of change washed upon the shores, But the sands of time held firm. Gold filled the hands of merchants, While the winds whispered the names of those who toiled. History’s pen has no ink for the nameless, yet they remain. Verse 5: A paper signed, a life restored – so they say. Yet the groundnut still grows, and the markets still hum. What was bought in flesh is now paid in land, But the faces of the buyers and sellers remain the same. The sun rises again, but shadows still cling to the past.
